The real-time executive is a dedicated operating system that provides a real-time application in charge of controlling a process with services enabling it to meet its main constraint: the time available for execution.

There are many real-time executables available today, which can be divided into two categories: so-called native executables, specifically designed for real-time, which are often proprietary or in-house, and executables derived from existing classic systems, often derived from the Unix system and complying with the POSIX standard (1003.1b and 1003.1c).
