4. Control, detection and inspection methods used in the oil industry
The oil industry calls on a wide range of corrosion control, detection and inspection techniques. Some are widely used in other industries, while others have been developed to meet the specific needs of the oil industry. For example, because of the long lengths (several thousand kilometers) of pipelines to be inspected, instrumented pigs have been developed. In parallel with these technological developments, advanced inspection and corrosion management procedures have been developed to increase the efficiency and reliability of the equipment operated: inspection plans quantifying risks and their probability have been implemented.
