3. Corrosion during oil refining
The treatment of crude oil from its entry into the refinery to its exit in the form of liquid fuels (gasoline, diesel, kerosene), liquid combustibles (fuel oils) or gaseous combustibles (butane, propane) and base products for the petrochemical industry (naphtha, ethylene, etc.), is carried out in several conversion processes, some of which operate under conditions of temperature, pressure and chemical environments specific to this industry.
In this chapter, we will examine the most specific corrosive environments: hydrolysis of chlorides to hydrochloric acid at high temperatures, high-temperature attacks by naphthenic acids, hydrogen, sulfur compounds and carbonaceous atmospheres. Other refining processes require less specific environments and will not be detailed here: they are covered in numerous books
