Corrosion under insulation (CUI)

Thermal Insulation

A material with low thermal conductivity, installed on the walls of industrial equipment to limit heat exchange with the external environment.

Stainless steel

An iron-based alloy containing at least 12% chromium by mass.

Low-alloy steel

An alloy based on iron and carbon (< 2% by mass), which may contain other alloying elements at a concentration of less than 5% by mass.

Stress corrosion cracking

A form of corrosion resulting from the combination of electrochemical attack and mechanical stress, leading to the formation of cracks.
