8. Conclusion
The public is aware of the need to reduce waste from traditional plastic food packaging made from non-biodegradable, non-renewable petroleum. At the same time, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has estimated that post-harvest agricultural losses account for 20-50% of food production per year. As a result, more efficient and sustainable food packaging is continually being developed to reduce waste, cut post-harvest losses and increase food security. This review highlights the great potential of biodegradable films containing nanomaterials for active packaging that offers extended shelf life and maintains the condition of packaged foods.
