3. Manufacturing process

Glass fibers can be manufactured using direct melting processes (continuous melting of glass raw materials in a furnace) or indirect melting processes (glass fibers drawing by remelting glass cullet beads). We will focus on the most common direct melting process as designed to maximize pull rates (amount of glass fiber produced per day), production yields, and thus to optimize production costs.

Glass fiber manufacturing process involves several steps:

  • glass batch preparation (mixture of raw materials ready to be melted);

  • batch melting to obtain molten glass;

  • fiberizing (fiber forming) ;

  • sizing (application of a thin layer of organic solutions on the fiber);

  • winding (shaping the fibers...
