Welding is used to fill surface cavities, while impregnation is used to restore watertightness.

Autogenous welding is used [B 7 730] .

The filler metal, in the form of rod or wire, must have a composition similar or identical to that of the part to be repaired. These products are not always commercially available, and the foundryman is often obliged to manufacture them himself.
