INTRODUCTION
The fundamental principles governing the operation of attack systems are recalled (cf.
), we discuss the various considerations involved in calculating these systems: filling methods, cavity volume to be taken into account, location of attacks according to part shape and the nature of the alloy being cast, choice of cavity filling time depending not only on the alloy's cooling time to liquidus, but also on the performance of the casting and core materials, etc.
The various "manual" and "computerized" calculation methods are presented, as well as the sand mold cavity filling simulation software most widely used in foundries, and examples of industrial applications handled by both methods.
