2. Main molding processes for large parts
Massive and/or large steel parts are usually produced in one-off or very small series, usually using cold chemical sand casting and core-making processes, which are carried out manually. Sand molds are either made in frames, obviously of large dimensions, or in pits dug into the foundry floor, in which the mold is built (pit molding).
Some revolutionary parts are also centrifuged in metal molds.
In these processes, the mold, usually made of silica sand (Box 1), is agglomerated by organic or mineral binders which harden at room temperature, in the presence of setting agents (catalyst, liquid hardener, setting gas pedal, etc.) previously added to the sand, hence their name: "self-hardening"...
