Even if deformations can rightly be considered as faults of carburizing and carbonitriding, a distinction is made here between them and the faults or anomalies that treated parts may present: soft spots, presence of carbides or carbonitrides, etc.

As a thermochemical treatment operation actually involves many sequences – storage, handling, washing, thermochemical treatment, possible re-machining, possible retreatment, shot-blasting, tempering, finishing, etc. – each of these can be the source of an anomaly which will have repercussions on the final product and its quality.
