To ensure proper bonding properties, the adhesive must be sufficiently strong and adhere to both substrates to be joined. It's always the weakest element that will cause the joint to fail. This may be the adhesive itself, or one of the two interfaces created with the materials to be joined. Stress conditions also play a major role in determining the bond's strength: temperature, environment, time or stress mode. The choice of adhesive is primarily determined by the field of application:

• permanent (structural) or removable (positioning) bonding;

• nature of the materials to be bonded (pre-existing surface chemical functions or those to be created by surface treatment) ;
