7. Processing thermosetting composite waste materials
The treatment of production waste and end-of-life parts from composite materials has become a priority issue for sustainable development.
In 2002, Europe produced around 1.8 Mt of composites, and France around 300 kt. Thermoset composites accounted for around 70% of this production.
7.1 Regulatory aspects
From a regulatory standpoint, the composites sector is concerned by three European directives.

Directive 1999/31/EC on waste management, in particular the regulation of landfills.
Law no. 92-646 of July 13, 1992 (J.O. of 07/14/92) stipulates that, as of July 1er 2002, only final waste may be landfilled.
An exemption has been granted until the end of 2004. The GPIC is in the process of classifying composite production waste...
