6. Panelling and battens
Large, flat panels are manufactured from wooden slats glued along their long sides. In this way, either decorative panels (figure 19) or slatted panels, such as those shown in figures 6b and c of the [BM 7 634] file, can be obtained.
Special machines called lathing or panelling machines are used for this purpose.
This technique offers two major advantages:
it offers the possibility of making large panels from slats of small square cross-section, from 2 × 2 to 5 × 5 cm, which makes it possible to recover small trees and slabs (rounded parts of the trunk) that would hardly be usable, and even the lateral offcuts of large boards,...
