1. Physical and mechanical properties of tin

1.1 Atomic and crystalline properties

— Atomic number 50.

— Atomic mass 118.7.

— Mean atomic radius 0.158 nm.

— Ion rays Sn2+ 0.093 nm and Sn4+ 0.074 nm.

— Electronic configuration of the ground-state atom: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d10 4s2 4p6 4d10 5s2 5p2.

— Allotropic varieties and structures :

  • white tin (β) quadratic (face-centered) system: density ρ = 7.29 g /cm3 ;

  • gray tin (α) cubic system (< 13.2°C): ρ = 5.77 g /cm3.

Note :

we also find a β ® γ transformation (orthorhombic system) above 161°C,...
