5. Ultramicroelectrodes
The term "ultramicroelectrodes" (UME) refers to electrodes whose surface area is considerably smaller than that of conventional indicator electrodes: of the order of µm 2 instead of mm 2 .
Note: the emergence of very small electrodes poses a vocabulary problem: the electrodes commonly used in voltammetry, with dimensions in the mm range, are usually referred to as "microelectrodes". The term "ultramicroelectrodes" has therefore been adopted to designate the electrodes described here, whose dimensions are on the micrometer scale.
