The instruments we are about to describe are essentially designed for qualitative and quantitative elemental chemical analysis. They are said to be sequential if, when several elements are to be investigated or assayed, analysis is carried out one element at a time. They are said to be simultaneous (or multichannel) if several elements can be analyzed at the same time.
