Use of reference materials

Depending on the type of reference material, demonstrating traceability may be more or less straightforward. When the producer of the reference material is an internationally recognised institute, such as a national metrology institute or an international reference organisation, the material is accompanied by a certificate specifying the reference value, the associated uncertainty, and, where applicable, the corresponding unit.

In this case, recognition of the certificate is based on the status of the issuing body, particularly its participation in international recognition agreements, such as the CIPM-MRA. However, even in this favourable context, the user remains responsible for demonstrating that the reference material is suitable for use in their own measurement process.
