7. Demonstrating the traceability of reference materials during an audit

Depending on the type of reference material, demonstrating traceability can be more or less straightforward. When the producer of the reference material is an internationally recognized institute, such as a national metrology institute or an international reference organization, the material is accompanied by a certificate specifying the reference value, the associated uncertainty, and, where applicable, the corresponding unit.

In this case, recognition of the certificate is based on the status of the issuing body, particularly its participation in international recognition agreements, such as the CIPM-MRA. However, even in this favorable context, the user remains responsible for demonstrating the suitability for use of the reference material in their own measurement process.
