3. Photophysics of organic molecules
This chapter gives a descriptive presentation of the energy levels of a molecule and the different de-excitation modes of organic molecules such as aromatics. The structuring of the energy levels of atoms and molecules and the different types of electronic transition of molecules, as well as the rules of electronic transition which concern the quantum description of atoms and molecules, will not be covered. The reader is invited to consult the reference works.
In an approximate description where molecular motions are separable, we distinguish different energy levels in the fluorescence phenomenon linked to its electronic, vibrational, rotational, translational and ionization states.
