3. Dynamic problems
The dynamic behavior of a shaft line is fundamentally conditioned by the coupling. Incorrect selection can lead to torsional vibrations, resulting in shaft line failure (coupling or shaft breakage). When selecting a coupling, it is essential to analyze this phenomenon.
The mechanical actions on a single shaft line (figure 19) are the driving and resisting torques that induce the machine's overall rotational motion, and the relative motion that can stress the shafts in often alternating torsion (shaft line torsional vibrations).
If the driving torque C m is equal to the resisting torque Cr, the rotary motion is uniform; the coupling torsion is constant:
