Experimental determination of the flash and fire points involves measuring the temperatures corresponding to these two points in an "open cup". Measurements are taken consecutively, using the same apparatus, the "Cleveland" method, according to well-defined heating, temperature rise, ignition and combustion procedures.

This methodology is the subject of ASTM D 92 and NF EN ISO 2592 standards.

• Flash or flammable point

  This is the temperature at which a fluid must be heated so that the vapors emitted ignite on contact with a flame and are immediately extinguished.

  Knowing the flash point provides information on the volatility of the oil and, possibly, on the presence of flammable substances in the fluid.
