Standard NF EN 1560 (May 1989) legally specifies the designation of cast iron families:

  • EN indication (for standardized grades) ;

  • the letters G (cast product) and J (cast iron);

  • an optional indication: a letter specifying the structure of the graphite: L (lamellar), S (spheroidal), M (malleable), V (vermicular), N (no graphite);

  • an optional indication: a letter specifying the micrographic structure (A austenite, F ferrite, P perlite, etc.);

  • the indication :

    • or tensile strength, in MPa, and elongation, in %,
