3. Adapting the turbocharger to the engine
The turbocharged engine is vulnerable at low engine speeds under full load, as the low gas flow through the turbine results in a lack of energy and therefore an air pressure that is too low for the engine's needs.
In all cases of turbocharging a road-traction engine, we prefer to adapt the turbocharger to the maximum torque speed, possibly at a lower speed and at full torque.
3.1 Diesel engine sensitivity to supercharging
The operating limits of a diesel engine are linked to air supply conditions:
low boost pressure leads to excessive smoke and exhaust temperatures;
excessive boost pressure can lead to maximum combustion pressures that are unacceptable...
