3. Scientific and technological challenges
When designing this type of machine, the main challenge is to integrate into the body of the artificial insect one or more actuators of sufficient energy density to create kinematics similar to those of insect wings. The latter must generate a lifting force greater than the nanodrone's weight to enable it to take off. Once this stage has been completed, the remaining work lies in the search for bio-inspired solutions to achieve performance in terms of communication and orientation in space close to that of social insects (bees, ants, termites).
Remarkably, the wings of some flying insects beat at very high cadences: up to kilohertz in ceratopogonids. More precisely, it is the action of powerful muscles in the thorax that causes the wings to move....
