1. Normative context
Before turning to the contribution that standardization can make to mechatronics, it's worth reiterating a few general points about standards. For a more detailed description, please refer to the relevant Techniques de l'Ingénieur articles. Decree no. 2009-697 of June 16, 2009 on standardization defines this activity as follows:
"Standardization is an activity of general interest, the purpose of which is to provide reference documents drawn up by consensus by all interested parties, covering rules, characteristics, recommendations or examples of good practice relating to products, services, methods, processes or organizations. It aims to encourage economic development and innovation, while taking account of sustainable development objectives"
