7. Magnetic properties in conjunction with physical, chemical and mechanical properties
In the above-mentioned cases, magnetic properties are the determining factors (apart from price) in the choice of material. There are also many applications in which magnetic properties take second place to electromagnetic (Curie temperature, resistivity), physico-chemical (corrosion resistance, surface finish, vacuum degassing of soluble elements, etc.) or mechanical (expansion, strength, toughness, fatigue) material selection criteria. To maintain the optimum application performance of these characteristics, materials with satisfactory magnetic properties are often chosen. Examples include :
forged NiCrMo(Mn) alloy steels for massive engine parts and (turbo) alternators (mechanical strength and toughness are essential) ;
low-carbon and low-cost steels for magnetic yokes (relays, automotive actuators, etc.);...
