4. Auxiliary poles
Two types of auxiliary poles exist in DC machines: commutation poles and armature reaction compensation poles. These techniques are not used in low-power magnet motors, but appear in most machines above 10 kW. We won't go into the tricky calculation of these techniques, so we'll confine ourselves to describing their influence.
It can be demonstrated that armature transverse reaction is very low in permanent magnet motors. As the incremental permeability of the magnets is close to that of air, this type of motor has a large equivalent air gap.
