Historically, as mentioned in the introduction, supercapacitors were first used in electronic devices requiring low backup voltages and currents:
U < 6 V; I < mA.
These low-power applications are still in the majority today, but fast-growing fields such as electric vehicles and telecommunications are demanding high specific power. Hybrid installations coupling supercapacitors with other means of storing or producing electrical energy are currently being developed. In the longer term, supercapacitors seem capable of achieving performances that would enable them to become autonomous means of storing and supplying electrical energy in installations using solar and/or wind power.
