The magnetomotive force (MMF) of a winding is defined as the cumulative sum of ampere-turns encountered when moving along the air gap.
Each time it passes a notch, the MMF is algebraically increased by the value of the total current present in said notch. This is obviously a periodic function. The advantage of the MMF concept is that it is governed by currents, which are of course the sources of the magnetic field.
