The development of nuclear energy in this century, and in particular its acceptance by society, will only be possible if serious guarantees are provided in a number of areas. This implies that a number of constraints must be taken into account, regardless of the type of technology envisaged. We will deal with safety, waste, non-proliferation and economic issues in turn.
