4. Causes of capacitor degradation
Feedback from the operation of power capacitors on the EDF network (figure 19 ) enables us to distinguish between two types of causes of degradation: intrinsic and external.
4.1 Intrinsic causes
When operating on networks, capacitors are subject to electrical and/or thermal stresses due to their very operation. It is essential to take account of physical phenomena whose appearance and development could rapidly lead to failure, in particular :
thermal instability of dielectrics ;
impurities accidentally introduced during manufacturing ;
