Solid Sorption Chillers and Heat Pumps

Adsorption refrigeration systems were first marketed in the early 20th century. In the 1920s, Miller marketed an adsorption refrigerator based on the silica gel-sulfur dioxide couple.

But it was in the late 1970s that several initiatives were taken to commercialize solid sorption refrigeration systems.

For adsorption, we can cite several commercializations of solar refrigerators: Chernev (Zepower Company) with a natural zeolite-water pair; BLM (in collaboration with one of the authors, F.M.) used the activated carbon-methanol pair. Shelton (Wave Air) used a zeolite-water pair, with a "heat wave" cycle, for air conditioning. Nevertheless, these early commercializations were short-lived.
