European standardization
Standardization in the Field of Refrigeration

At European level, standardization is mainly organized within the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).

Although created in 1962, CEN received a new impetus towards the end of the 1980s. While Article 100A of the Treaty of Rome of March 25, 1957 stipulated that technical harmonization was to be achieved by means of directives transposed into national law, the Council Decision of May 7, 1985, known as the "New Approach", strengthened the role of standardization with the aim of :

• simplify and accelerate the legislative process ;

• avoid making detailed rules compulsory;

• strengthen synergies between economic players....
