In the field of gas and smoke purification, wet scrubbers hold a special place. A wet scrubber can be defined as a unit that brings a scrubbing liquid, such as water with or without neutralizing agents, into intimate contact with a gas or fume to be treated. In addition, its characteristic is that the washing liquid is not completely evaporated during the process. Wet scrubbers are widely used in industry to effectively reduce particulate emissions and soluble compounds such as acid gases and heavy metals. They are often combined with other technologies, in particular electrostatic precipitators. The dominant mechanism is inertial impaction, either of a particle against the wall (packings), or of a particle with a sprayed drop (rain or cross-flow scrubbers).
