6. Risks associated with nanomaterials used in packaging
The main regulation governing the use of materials in contact with food is Regulation (EC) 1935/2004. It stipulates that all food-contact materials must be inert, to prevent substances being transferred to products in quantities that would harm human health or unacceptably alter the composition or properties of the food. This poses a problem for active or intelligent packaging, which is not inert by design. Lists of authorized materials have been drawn up, with maximum authorized migration rates.
