4. Topology maintenance
RPL has two mechanisms for dealing with network failures (links or non-functional nodes): global repair and local repair.
4.1 Global repair
Global repair is triggered by the root RPL. To do this, it increments its DODAGVersionNumber, which results in the construction of a new topology by allowing all nodes in the network to choose a new position in the DODAG without being constrained by their rank in the old DODAG version.
