7. Disruptive Technologies

Several disruptive technologies are currently being researched to improve optical transmission in the areas of access and transport. Among these studies are hollow-core fiber and quantum key distribution.

7.1 Hollow-core fiber

Optical fibers currently in the research and prototyping stages, such as hollow-core fibers, are now reaching maturity.
