5.1 Xeon Phi architectures

Intel's approach to many-core processors is known as MIC (many-integrated-core) and has seen two generations of Xeon Phi, codenamed KNC (Knights Corner) and KNL (Knights Landing). These are coprocessors, with KNL also available as a standalone processor.

Intel's Xeon Phi coprocessor reflects the approach of extending the characteristics of multicore processors to the manycore domain, notably with:

  • software compatibility with the Intel range (x86 instruction set);

  • memory hierarchy with cache coherence: logically shared memory;

  • virtual memory with page translation and TLB;
