CBTC (Communication Based Train Control) systems are signalling systems that appeared in the early 2000s for urban transport systems. The objectives of this generation of systems are :

1) Improving performance. Performance is the capacity offered by the transport system. It is expressed in terms of how many passengers can be carried per hour at what average speed. The technical indicators that depend on signalling (over and above the number of passengers per train and traction/braking performance, which are linked to the rolling stock) are :

• the interval between trains (the time between 2 successive trains, corresponding to the maximum passenger waiting time on the platform). The capacity offered is equal to (3,600 x P/I), where P is the number of passengers a train can hold and I is the interval expressed in seconds,
