8. Some recent advances

In conclusion, we'd like to mention a few extensions of the basic notions and a few advances in mathematical morphology.

Recent work has focused on filtering, in particular with the development of related or leveling operators according to different notions of connection, segmentation, with extensions of the watershed (tree-based algorithms, segmentation hierarchies, stochastic aspects...), efficient algorithms for calculating transformations, and of course applications.

The application of morphological operators to images that are no longer scalar but vector-based (color, multi- or hyperspectral images) requires the definition of a partial order on the vectors. As the calculation of max or min component by component is not satisfactory, other order relations have been proposed, which guarantee in particular that new colors are not introduced...
