5. Production methods (polymorphic screening)

Because different polymorphs and pseudopolymorphs of the same chemical entity may have different physico-chemical characteristics, their discovery, preparation and characterization are essential steps in research and development. There is really no exhaustive method for discovering all possible forms.

In the article dedicated to crystallization, we have seen how complex the process of nucleation and crystal growth is, and how the presence of impurities or modifications, however slight, in experimental conditions can eventually block the nucleation of more stable forms, or a contrario not allow the intermediate isolation of metastable forms.
