2. Hamilton equations

The equations of motion, as we have seen for the Lagrange equations 1 , are second-order differential equations. They can be reduced to first order.

The differential equation x " + ω 2 x = 0 can be replaced by the first-order differential system :

x ' = y ; y ' = – ω ...
