1. Examples of convection phenomena

A simple example of natural convection, taken from everyday life, is illustrated in figure : the flow of air above a heat source (here the glowing end of an incense stick) in an atmosphere at rest is visualized by the smoke. It can be seen that, after a zone of regular ascent (known as "laminar"), the plume destabilizes and gives rise to turbulent volutes.
