4. Conclusion

The use of synergy effects between different heteroatoms, particularly for phosphorus-nitrogen compounds, improves the effectiveness of the phosphorus flame retardant and reduces the required incorporation rate, leading to material savings. The primary aim of the reactive approach, which is currently gaining ground in flameproofing, is to avoid the disadvantages of the additive approach, i.e. the plasticizing effect and additive migration. However, as the reactive approach generally involves high incorporation rates, it seems appropriate to combine this approach with the valorization of biosourced raw materials. What's more, recent biobased polymers have seen their image tarnished by the incorporation of petroleum-based phosphorus flame retardants.
