2. Application examples
Since the 1980s, a large number of examples of practical uses of the wavelet transform can be found in the literature. These applications can be divided into two different categories, depending on whether the wavelet tool is used to compress the information contained in the signal or to analyze it.
Compression involves translating the initial signal into a given language using a reduced number of words. In this case, two types of compression can be distinguished: that which retains all the initial information, and that which retains only the most energetic part. In many cases, the use of wavelet transforms enables us to detect events in the initial signal that are useful for understanding it (continuity, gradient) and to retain only the associated coefficients.
