5. Objectives of hospital traceability

The concept of health safety has emerged in parallel with the quality procedures introduced by the French health authority (HAS) as part of the accreditation (now certification) process for all French hospitals. This recent concept is based on the findings of dramatic shortcomings in healthcare systems. In the first version of accreditation (known as V1), the emphasis was on the coherence of the establishment's overall organization and compliance with procedures and protocols. Version 2 of the accreditation (certification) focuses on the clinical management of patients. The 2010 version of certification reinforces the requirements concerning health facility management, patient care and patient rights. Certification of healthcare establishments is a regulatory requirement, and takes place every five years.
