1.1 Context

The supply chain of Michelin, a manufacturer of tires for all types of vehicles, comprises eight levels (from materials suppliers to retailers), i.e. 4 highly heterogeneous industrial levels (continuous processes such as petrochemicals, metallurgy, component assembly, etc.) and 4 distribution levels.

Complexity stems not only from the number of items (15,000) and nomenclatures (200 materials in a tire), but also from the number of local and intercontinental point-to-point flows, linked to vertical integration and site specialization. Inventories are high, on the order of 4 billion euros, with a service rate of 100% for vehicle manufacturers...
