First, let's take a look at the current organization of an information system. A comprehensive approach to the information system, based on Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM ), can be found in a wealth of literature dating back to the early 1980s. Let's try to develop a pragmatic approach instead.

The organization of a production information system, in an industrial company, relies on the combination of three systems to help improve the performance of a production process:

  • cross-functional, global value-adding system (ERP – Entreprise Resources Planning );

  • advanced planning system (APS – Advanced Planning and Scheduling);

  • local MES ( – Manufacturing Execution System).
