2. The challenges of responsible maintenance

The aim of maintenance is to keep a system in operational condition. This maintenance activity is based on controlling the occurrence of failures which inevitably have consequences for the population, the environment, the company's employees and the company's economic situation.

Responsible maintenance is maintenance that justifies its actions not only in terms of availability, safety and costs, but also in terms of sustainable development. Maintenance activities are then justified by the reduction or even eradication of failures with consequences for human beings, the environment and the company's economic health, thus leading to decisions in line with sustainable development. The solutions implemented are also assessed in terms of their consequences and their compliance with the principles of sustainable development....
