3. Checking seams

3.1 Materials and methods for dimensional examination of crimps

The dimensional examination of can seams is quite complex and requires a certain amount of expertise. All the measurements collected enable us to determine the conformity of a seam to one or more quality standards.

A compliant seam is deemed to be watertight, which constitutes a control point that is very often the subject of a CCP (Critical Control Point), or at least a PrPO (operational prerequisite), in a company's sanitary control plan.

The tightness of the can after crimping is an essential requirement, and cannot be tolerated when it comes to controlling the biological risk of recontamination after heat treatment.
