1. Definitions

Packaging is defined as any object made of materials of any kind, designed to contain and protect goods, from raw materials to finished products, to enable their handling and transport from producer to consumer or user, and to ensure their presentation.

More generally, product packaging can be defined as: "everything inside the product that isn't the product itself".

Depending on the main roles it will have to play, a packaging can be qualified by the following terms (figure 1 ):
